The Origins of the Exaltations in Astrology

Qote from Chris Brennan:

„Keiji Yamamoto and Charles Burnett released their .. translation of The Great Introduction to Astrology by the 9th century astrologer Abu Ma’shar. This was the first time this text has been translated into English in its entirety. …the most interesting thing I found was that Abu Ma’shar frequently cites a lost Greek text attributed to Hermes Trismegistus. This appears to be the same text called the Panaretos that the 4th century astrologer Paulus Alexandrinus drew on for his treatment of seven planets Lots, although Abu Ma’shar shares much more from the text than Paulus did. The most interesting pieces of the Hermes material preserved by Abu Ma’shar is that it contains a set of rationales for the domicile and exaltation schemes that are unique, and it seems to preserve what may be the original conceptual rationales for both of those schemes. The exaltations chapter in particular provides a much more detailed explanation for the exaltations than any I’ve ever seen, and it is also unique because it provides an astronomical rationale for the exaltations degrees, not just the signs of exaltation and fall. …. Ben (Dykes) was able to confirm that most of the math for the exaltation degrees seems to work out …“

Dr. Levente László – Whole Sign Housesászlóászló

Rhetorius, Zeno’s Astrologer, and a Sixth-Century Astrological Compendium –

Dr. Levente László – Quote on Facebook:“That said, the answer to the question, briefly, is that quadrant-based divisions appeared in the 5th century CE the latest, as a few nativities and inceptions of this era testify. In these horoscopes, quadrant-based divisions were used together with WSH. This practice continued both with later Byzantine astrology and—as far as I know, although I’m not a specialist of this area—Islamicate astrology until recent times, but for some reasons—and I suspect the relatively narrow scope of Arabic works translated to Latin in the 12th and 13th centuries should be accounted for this—the use of WSH wasn’t transmitted into Medieval European astrology“ – and „I’d add that to date, the subtleties and the rationale of this parallel usage are poorly understood since almost none of the relevant Islamicate and Byzantine horoscopes and theoretical material have been studied. Still, available evidence suggests that quadrant-based divisions tended to be employed in contexts where higher accuracy was expected, such as in annual methods for nativities, or where the astrologer wanted to make a case. It seems pretty likely to me that getting into cumbersome calculations required either clients willing to pay the price of exclusivity or specific demonstrative intentions from the astrologer’s part, so the choices were determined more by ease and purpose than theoretical considerations. Still, of course, this opinion should be revised when more sources become accessible.“.

What is still the unresearchable Enigma – What did the practice in the 9th Century on Questions, Elections and Mundane look like – Which houses and if more than one system – How and why and with what distribution – was the bulk of delineation only with WSHes?
